ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:
KAREN TORRES, Psy.D, ABPP-CN
Dr. Karen Torres is a bilingual (English and Spanish) board-certified neuropsychologist at the UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center where she works together with an interdisciplinary team to evaluate people who are reporting memory changes. Dr. Torres has performed neuropsychological evaluations for the Spanish-speaking community since 2007 and has worked with these communities in Los Angeles, Detroit, Boston, and Seattle. Her interests include improving the quality of care for Spanish-speaking individuals who are experiencing neurodegenerative diseases, providing education and interventions focused on improving and maintaining brain health, and working collaboratively with communities to improve brain health.
MAUREEN FELDMAN, MA, CCHT
Maureen Feldman is an authority and advocate on issues facing the aging population. Maureen has conducted research, written and produced training videos, and regularly presents on the positive impacts of social connectivity, and the necessity of technology, and of cross-generational mentorships. She is the director of the Social Isolation Impact Project at The Motion Picture & Television Fund, and the Founding Chair of the Social Isolation Impact Coalition.
BRIAN RUFERT
Brian Rufert was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in April 2017, during a time in his life where he was working full time and doing outreach ministry. In the summer of 2018, Brian experienced mental health changes that left him with many questions, concerns, and fears. Working through these were a struggle. In August 2022, Brian began to make significant changes to his mental health and PD management. For the past two years, he has continued to educate himself about PD and find the courage to reach out to others within the PD community. Brian’s mission is now to help others find hope within their lives.
MODERATOR: KATIE FREEMAN, MSW
Katie Freeman, MSW is the Manager of Programs and Community Engagement for APDA Northwest. As a geriatric social worker, they help members of the Parkinson’s community get connected to local resources and find new ways to live their best lives with Parkinson’s disease. Katie’s interests include cognitive health and wellness, community building, and health equity. They are a skilled support group facilitator, public speaker, and advocate for older adults with neurodegenerative disorders.
