Today Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-East Shore) joined the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) at their national headquarters, located in her legislative district, to announce April as “Parkinson Disease Awareness Month”.The assemblywoman delivered a Proclamation from the New York State Assembly designating the month as such.
“APDA does tremendous work from their national headquarters right here on Staten Island, having raised and invested more than $86 million in patient services and education. They are a tremendous asset to those diagnosed with Parkinson’s, as well as their families, across the entire country.I am proud to partner with APDA in increasing awareness and helping them continue their mission,” said Assemblywoman Malliotakis.
“We are thrilled to welcome Assemblywomen Malliotakis to APDA and honored to receive this proclamation recognizing April Parkinson’s awareness month. She has been a tremendous advocate for seniors in our community focused on providing access to care, program, services, and affordable medication. It is support like this that allows APDA to continue to Ease the Burden – Find the Cure for those touched by Parkinson’s disease,” said Leslie A. Chambers, President & CEO of APDA.
Every nine minutes there is a new diagnosis, which means that in April alone nearly 5,000 individuals in this country will learn they have Parkinson’s disease.APDA considers April the perfect time to take action that can change these startling statistics and outcomes for the more than one million people in the United States coping with this neurological movement disorder.Locally, over 1,000 Staten Islanders and 43,406 people in New York State are living with the disease.
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurological disorder with no treatment, therapy, or drug to slow or halt its progression. For more than 50 years, APDA has led the charge as the nation’s largest grassroots organization serving the needs of those touched by Parkinson’s.
Assemblywoman Malliotakis and APDA are urging everyone to visit www.apdaparkinson.org every day for the rest of April to discover interactive ways to change lives such as sharing your own story or that of a loved one, learning ways to achieve the best quality of life in spite of a diagnosis, gain access to helpful resources, or make a critical donation to help fund APDA’s dual purpose to Ease the Burden – Find the Cure.
