Exercise empowers individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) to feel stronger and more in control.  The goal of aquatic exercise is to rekindle a desire to be proactive with the disease and foster a healthy and active lifestyle. 

 

The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) and the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) are proud to announce the release of the revised booklet, AQUATIC EXERCISE – An Exercise Program for People with Parkinson’s Disease.  Published by the APDA, the booklet was authored under the guidance of AEA with input from contributing authors Laurie Denomme, BS; Kathi Sims, RN; Helen M. Tilden, RN and Mary Wykle, PhD.

 

Available free upon request from the ADPA national office (800-223-2732) or from the website (www.apdaparkinson.org), the booklet covers a multitude of topics pertinent to individuals with Parkinson’s disease, including Benefits of Aquatic Exercise, What to Look for in a Pool Facility, Aquatic Safety Issues Specific to PD, What to Look for in an Aquatic Program.  An additional section is geared toward the health and fitness professional and includes ideas for program design as well as sample exercises that target balance, gait, strength and endurance. 

 

The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. was founded in 1961 to "ease the burden and find a cure" for Parkinson's disease. The organization focuses its energies on research, patient support, education and raising public awareness of the disease.
